We Had Class

Thanks for modeling Mike!

I was going through my jewelry box the other day and came across our high school class rings. Hubby graduated in 1970 and I graduated in 1971 (I know, we're OLD!)
It was just at the time that the "new style of ring" came out.I LOVED the idea of a stone in an oval ring, but who does that??? (tons of people who didn't just do what everyone else in their family did!) Hubby's ring was oval AND had a blue stone (his birth stone and the school color) and it had an Eagle (school mascot) on the stone.
I am the youngest in my family and so my ring was similar to what I knew (and I think it is close to my sister's rings-is that right Mary Etta?) I paid for my own ring so I was pretty cheap, I mean FRUGAL!!) rectangular with no stone and an Eagle inside with my initials and year on the sides. I also had my class pictures in black and white with the large picture for mom and dad color washed with oils over the pictures so that it would look like my sister's pictures as they all sat together on top of the piano, and Hubby's pictures were in "natural color" (I remember that is what they called it.) Well, with Hubby being the oldest, he made their tradition and I followed tradition.
You see how our rings turned out, although it didn't really matter as we hadn't had our rings all that long when we exchanged them and "went steady"...(how romantic)
Anyway, that is the only class we had then (or now!)
Seriously!!

  1. Looks like your class ring is a lot like mine, was thinking mine has a covered wagon on it! (of course, maybe because I'm a LITTLE older!) Our yr. book had a covered wagon on it. Its been over 50 yrs since graduation, cant believe that!
Hope everyone is well. I have had a cold, so, not so happy at the moment! Got up with a headache this am, although I finally slept most of the night! Havent seen dad since last weekend, but don't want to pass this on to him.
The weather is very cold & just a touch of snow. We were all hoping for a snow day this past weekend, but no luck.
Been trying my luck with "words with friends" lately, but, I don't win games, so no different there. Fun to do anyway.
Am anxious to see my new Vera Bag! Just ordered so will be a bit. Always a lot of fun opening those pkgs.
I hope your all well & can stay that way. Have a great weekend!

  2. Hello Mare and Mare-bloggers,
Have been waiting a long time to say that!!!
A rainy day here in southern Cal. We need the rain, just not to much of it.

Mary-hope you feel better soon! I have had a cold/sinus/chest thing also off and on for what seems like months...am really tired of it! Make sure you take a picture of your new Vera bag to show us!

Katie-THANKS for helping get this Mare show back on the road!!! How are you?!

    Luvs-getting the rain today?

TG-ARE YOU ABLE TO POST AGAIN? IS IT STILL CHILLY THERE, ARE YOU IN YOUR FLANNELS?!

Amy-have a GREAT time on your
    get-a-way!!!

Mare-wonderful memories with those rings and I so enjoy your stories that go along. I do have my class ring...somewhere...hopefully packed with my other jewelry in mom's safe. I think they are lovely! Put them both on one chain and wear them around your neck! You could start a new trend :-)

Going to look at a couple of houses today. The market has been SLOW this last month but will hopefully speed up a little bit. I am hoping those that didn't want to deal with it over the holidays will now get going. None come on the market but anything good is gone in a flash. Hard to understand since most areas are a buyers market but around here it is a sellers market :-(
Oh well, I will find something! Found one a really liked a couple of days ago. I might be putting an offer in soon....any prayers and good thoughts would be much appreciated!
    Oh dear, blabbing is back...!
    (thanks for listening...)
    Hugs, Beth

Hi BeachBonnie, Annie, SCM, and any peekers!

  3. Hi Mare and all,

I still have my class ring. Reading this, I went to my jewelry cabinet and put mine on. Class of 1966. Mine kind of looks like yours, Mare, except it has mother of pearl as the stone. Most of the boys got black onyx (school colors black and gold) and many girls got the mother of pearl.

Yes, it is raining here this morning, Beth. Looks like it has stopped for the moment, but it rained all night. Going to Irvine tonight for birthday dinner with my family. My birthday is actually Monday. Meeting a girlfriend (since high school) tomorrow for brunch. Love getting to celebrate my birthday for days ;-). The girls I work with gave me a nice Apple gift card, so I am getting an iPhone!!

Have a good weekend! It's nice to see everyone posting again, so I hope the technical problems are over.

  4. MARE, OF ALL MY TREASURES I THINK I STILL LOVE MY CLASS RING AS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I GUESS BECAUSE DAD HAD TO WORK SO HARD TO PAY FOR IT. AS ALL TEENAGERS WE THOUGHT MONEY GREW ON TREES.EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T HAVE MONEY IN OUR WALLETS UNLESS WE BABYSAT.DAD NEVER GOT IN DEBT AND IF THE FAMILY NEEDED SOMETHING HE WORKED JUST THAT MUCH HARDER. HE WORKED FROM THE TIME OF HIS EARLY TEENAGE YEARS.I BELIEVE IT WAS AROUND 16. HE HAD TO QUIT SCHOOL AND TAKE CARE OF HIS MOTHER AND FATHER BECAUSE THEY WERE VERY SICK. THEN HE HAD TO RAISE HIS SISTERS GIRLS BECAUSE AGAIN SHE WAS DYING [TB]. BETWEEN ALL THAT HE WENT INTO WW1.PLUS RAISED ALL OF US KIDS.I KNOW BACK THEN. I WANTED A SENIOR RING.$35.00. DO YOU ANY OF YOU REMEMBER HOW MUCH $35.00 WAS BACK THEN? WOW. IT WAS ALOT OF MONEY BUT DAD KNEW HOW MUCH I WANTED THAT RING SO HE WORKED JUST THAT MUCH HARDER SO I COULD HAVE IT. THAT WAS BACK IN THE 50'S.OH I GOT MY RING.DID I THANK HIM? PROBALY NOT BUT I'M THANKING HIM TODAY. THANKS DAD. ALSO, I WORE IT PROUDLY. I STILL HAVE IT AND WONDER WHO WILL I LEAVE IT TOO THAT WILL LOVE IT LIKE I DO.
MY RING LOOKS ALOT LIKE YOURS MARE EXCEPT MIND HAS A PRETTY DARK BLUE STONE. THE YEAR IS ON BOTH SIDES.

BETH AS YOU CAN SEE I'M FINALLY ABLE TO MAKE COMMENTS AGAIN ON HERE. I FELT LIKE I LOST ALL MY BEST FRIENDS BUT ONE.

WE ALL HAVE TO THANK OUR KATIE FOR HELPING MARE GET THINGS STRAIGHTEN OUT SO THANKS KATIE. AS I'VE TOLD YOU MANY TIMES YOUR A GOOD PERSON. HUGS.

I'M SITTING HERE FEELING USELESS. GRAMPS ON HIS KNEES FINALLY CLEANING THE WOOD FLOORS. I LOVE THEM BUT THEY ARE WORK AND THERE'S NO WAY I CAN HELP. HE SHOULD BE DOING THEM EITHER. I'M ALL FOR HAVING SOMEONE COME IN AND DO THEM.$$$$$$$$$$$.THAT'S WHEN I WISH I WAS A LITTLE BIT RICH NOT BIG RICH BUT LITTLE RICH.

  5. Oh hello hello! is so good to see everyone!
LUVs...yeah on the iphone! I thought it was gonna be kind of complex phone and was a little disappointed at how simple it was,and didn't like the apps as much as the BB, BUT, I am getting used to the ease of it (that sounded weird) and LOVE that I can play WORDS on it !!!! It's worth it for just that! :) Let us know how you like it when you get it... Oh, have you checked out "Life at Golden Pines" again (that said they had a wheaten??) They adopted a sweet golden...neat to follow it.
GRANNY...your daddy knows you love your ring...he wanted to do it for you and knew you'd appreciate it...whether then or later :)
ME, send me a picture of your ring ok?? I think you might be right about the covered wagon...our year book had the covered wagon on it too.
Beth...HI!!! So happy to see you again.
Hey Katie, how was night out with the hubster?? Hope you had a good time.
Ok everyone, time to move along here...
Have a great eve...Mike and I are just hangin' out listening/ watching "don't forget the lyrics" on the computer (don't have tv and not sure we will...looked at them again this weekend, but don't know...really odd as we LOVE tv!!)
    Later all...
    Mare

  6. WOW!! Almost everyone is here! Annie, Casey and Bonnie, come join us today! :)

I was glad to make my small contribution to getting Mare pointed in the direction she needed to get us all back in here.LOL Now I'm kind of sorry, though, because she's beating the pants off of me on "Words With Friends"! HA!
Lastly to Mare, wait until you get into some of the harder and secret stuff your iPhone will do! It's fun!

I want to comment on what each of you said but this is already getting too long-winded. Just want to be SURE you all know how excited I am to be reading your posts again!

I graduated in 1970 but for some reason, didn't get a class ring. I already worked almost full-time so it wasn't lack of money. I just can't remember! GRANNY_GREAT STORY!

Beth, good luck househunting! Surely you'll find something you love real soon!

Luvs, happy birthday!! Sounds as though you have arranged to make it all a blast! Good for you!

Mary, get well soon! My last 2 colds held on way too long so do more than I did to get rid of it! You, too, Beth!

    Yay! We're back! :)

    Katie

  7. Okay, I just wrote a long entry, and was not able to post it, so I hope I am not blocked from Mare's blog now! I will be very sad. Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Sunday and tell you that I got another Apple gift card, so now my future iPhone is paid for. Maybe after birthday brunch, I will go to an Apple store and buy it. Excited!
